There’s nothing better than a refreshing drink to cool you off from the hot summer sun, and this Watermelon Limemade Shave ice Drink is the perfect fit! Made with fresh fruit, the drink is quick to prepare and great for all audiences. The drink is kid friendly (I made with my 11-year old cousin) – or can be made into a cocktail with a shot of rum or tequila.
To make this drink, I used my favorite kitchen appliance of the summer – my KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment! If you don’t have this, you can use a similar appliance – such as this Dash Shave Ice Maker. Alternatively, you can also freeze your liquid and use a microplane to manually shave the ice.
KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment
Last summer, I invested in the KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment, and I haven’t regretted the purchase once. The attachment works with the KitchenAid Stand Mixer and has two different options for course or fine ice.
The course ice is still pretty light and fluffy, but I prefer using the “fine” blade for drinks.
The set also comes with plastic molds that freeze your liquid into ice. You can freeze water for the base, or any other liquid for fun recipes like this watermelon shave ice!
The typical KitchenAid Shave Ice attachment set is $99.99 with 4 plastic molds. I actually got mine on sale for about $75 with 8 plastic molds. I recommend keeping an eye out for sales or special deals if you’re interested in purchasing!

The Watermelon Limemade Shave Ice Recipe
When brainstorming drink ideas that would work with my Shave Ice attachment, I was most inspired by Sonic’s Cherry Limemade and slushies. After making fresh watermelon juice earlier in the week, I decided to combine the two ideas into this Watermelon Limemade Shave Ice Drink at home.
To start, I used a recipe from epicurious as the base. I like to freeze my liquid the night before. You can also prepare it many days (or even weeks) ahead of time.
If you prepare ahead, start by freezing the pucks in the plastic mold. Then, I like to pop them out of the mold once frozen. I store the pucks in a gallon sized Ziploc bag, and then wash my plastic molds. My plastic molds are now available to make other treats or drinks, and I still can still enjoy a watermelon limemade shave ice drink whenever I want!
Note – This recipe makes 3-4 servings. For 3 servings, use 1 puck shave ice per drink. For 4 servings, use approximately 0.75 puck per shave ice drink.
Watermelon Limemade Shave Ice Drink
Equipment
- KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment (Alternatively – other shave ice device or microplane)
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup lime juice (about 4 limes)
- 2 cups watermelon juice (about 4 cups cubed watermelon)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1-2 cans Sprite (or club soda, topo chico, ginger beer, more watermelon juice, etc.)
Optional
- 1.5 fl oz tequila or rum of your choice (about 1 shot, or to taste)
- Mint leaves (for garnish)
- Lime slices (for garnish)
Instructions
Epicurious Watermelon Limemade Steps
- Prepare your watermelon juice by blending the watermelon cubes. Strain through a fine mesh sieve.
- Half and squeeze your limes until you have 1/2 cup lime juice.
- Combine watermelon juice, lime juice, and sugar. Stir well to combine and dissolve sugar.
- Pour the prepared watermelon limeade into cleaned KitchenAid pucks (or whatever other container you are using). This recipe made the perfect amount to fit into 3 pucks that came with my KitchenAid Shave Ice attachment kit.
Shave Ice Steps
- Once frozen, follow your usual steps to make Shave Ice.
- If using the KitchenAid, take your pucks out of the freezer and let rest for about 5 minutes.
- Then, using the "Fine" blade, I shaved the ice directly into a glass. (1 puck shaved = about 1 drink -> 3 drinks total OR 0.75 puck shaved = 1 drink -> 4 drinks total)
- Optionally top with a shot of rum or tequlia.
- Top off with Sprite (or soda/drink of your choice).
- Garnish with mint or limes. Enjoy!
