When I say I love boba tea, I really mean that I love grapefruit teas. My favorites are from 85 degrees bakery, Tea Top, and The Bep in Houston, but buying tea out can get expensive. Here is my refreshing, 5 minute prep smashed grapefruit citrus green tea recipe!
I have been making this smashed grapefruit tea non-stop, at least 1-2 times a week. It is a great pick-me up that you can adjust to your tastes. Enjoy!
Smashed Grapefruit Citrus Green Tea Ingredients
I use a 32 oz large mason jar for 1 large tea. I am also a notoriously slow drinker and will sometimes enjoy it over 2 days.
- Grapefruit
- The sweeter the grapefruit, the better! As I peel or cut my grapefruit, I will taste test a piece to see how sweet or sour or bitter the grapefruit is. This gives me a guideline to sweetening later.
- If you live in Texas, I found that the grapefruits from H-E-B are my favorite (even better than Costco!) They were sweeter and more consistent in flavor.
- Green Tea bags
- I prefer to use green tea bags so that I don’t have to strain. Alternatively, you can use loose leaf tea or whatever you have on hand!
- Honey
- Or other sweetener like agave, simple syrup, etc.
- Extra citrus slices (optional)
- I love adding a few extra slices of citrus, usually navel oranges. I have also added blood oranges, lemons, and oranges altogether.
- Sweet oranges can also help the flavor if your grapefruit is a little bitter or sour.
- Honey Grapefruit Tea syrup/concentrate
- I don’t usually use this anymore, but you can buy it at Asian grocery stores. This is great for when your grapefruit are more sour and bitter also.
- It is harder to find online, but here is a link to a similar one I have used before.

Smashed Grapefruit Citrus Green Tea
Equipment
- 1 large mason jar or small pitcher
Ingredients
- 1 large grapefruit
- 2-4 slices oranges or other citrus
- 2 bags green tea I like Bigelow's lemon green tea
- 1-2 tbsp honey or other sweetener, to taste
- 1-2 tbsp honey grapefruit syrup optional, I don't use
Instructions
- Cut your grapefruit into large cubes. I like to use a knife to cut off/peel, and I cut into 8-12 large cubes total.
- Add your grapefruit to your large cup/mason jar/pitcher.
- Use the back of a spoon or a muddler to smash your grapefruit.
- Add your orange (or other citrus) slices.
- Add hot boiling water until nearly full.
- Add 2 tea bags. Let steep for at least 5 minutes. (Tabby Tip: I leave the tea bags in the drink while it cools for an hour usually. )
- Let the tea cool for about 1 hour until just warm still. If your first time making, I recommend to taste and adjust with sweetener and add the honey grapefruit concentrate if desired/needed at this step while its still a little warm.
- Chill in the fridge. (Tabby Tip: I like to chill overnight or at least 2 hours total)
- Enjoy immediately, or serve over ice.
