KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment & Alternatives
I LOVE my KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment and highly recommend!
How it works:
- Freeze your liquid into ice pucks overnight using the provided molds.
- Choose the fine or course blade.
- Set up the attachment on your KitchenAid Stand mixer.
- Add your frozen ice puck into the attachment, turn on, and enjoy instantly!
- Finish with your favorite toppings.
Alternatives to the KitchenAid Shave Ice Attachment include the Dash Shave Ice Maker. Or, you can freeze your own pucks and use a microplane.
Shave Ice Recipes
For all of these recipes, I used the “Fine” blade that came with my attachment. They are all relatively similar, and I broke each recipe down into the following:
- The Inspiration – Some of these are copycats of my favorite desserts, and some are new but inspired desserts!
- Liquid Base– This is the liquid that you’ll freeze in your ice pucks. It is the base of the dessert!
- Toppings – All of the toppings I enjoyed, and ideas for other toppings too!
Feel free to personalize to your tastes, and enjoy!
Shave Ice with Condensed Milk & Fruit
This recipe is a copycat of one of my favorite dessert spots in Houston Chinatown – Juice Box!
We always order the shaved ice with strawberries, mango, and strawberry ice cream. It is topped with condensed milk and is SO GOOD.
The freezing liquid, or base, is just water!
I use at least 2 ice pucks when making at home to share.
If you’re making for just yourself, you could do just 1!
When making at home, my favorite toppings are
- fresh mango
- mango sorbet or strawberry ice cream
I usually add strawberries if we have them also! Other yummy fruits to include are melons, watermelon, pineapple, or maybe even papaya.
Milky Shave Ice (Korean Bingsu)
Yes, I’ll admit my photos for the first two recipes look the same. This is super similar to the first recipe but more inspired by Bingsu – a Korean milky shaved ice dessert!
There are tons of popular toppings – with fresh fruit, syrups, red bean, etc. The biggest difference from the previous recipe is the base freezing liquid!
The liquid base for this is heavy cream and milk. I chose to do about 2 parts milk to 1 part heavy cream.
There are many variations, some with a little bit of condensed milk, others with only milk, and some with milk + water combo.
The toppings can be similar to the last recipe, but with Bingsu in mind as the inspiration, you can get even more creative!
My favorite combo (unfortunately unpictured) is mango, sweetened condensed milk, red bean, and whipped cream/vanilla ice cream.
Other topping ideas: matcha, rice cakes, strawberries, melon, and jellies.
Coffee Shave Ice
The inspiration for this was combining a Frappuccino, Vietnamese Coffee, Affogato, and Shave Ice in a single dessert.
The picture shows this dessert in a bowl, but I think it would have been equally delicious in a cup with a straw!
The liquid base for this is water or milk. I used water but in the future would prefer a milky base!
For this coffee shave ice, I topped with:
- 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
- about 1 shot of espresso or equivalent amount of concentrated Vietnamese coffee
- drizzle of condensed milk
I let my coffee cool a bit, and added to both the ice and then on top of the ice cream! You can also embrace the affogato aspect and use hot espresso/coffee over the ice cream. It was super delicious.
Halo Halo Inspired Shave Ice
This Halo Halo shave ice is inspired by a video from @nom_life.
I love the coconut milk and tapioca pearls in this recreation/recipe!
Just water for the base of Halo-Halo!
Halo halo translates to “mix-mix” in Tagalog, and you can mix in your favorite toppings such as fruits, sweetened beans, flan, jellies, ube halaya, and more.
It is often topped with a scoop of ube ice cream, and I made mine with tapioca pearls, sweetened coconut milk, mango, and red bean.
I like to refrigerate everything ahead of time, and it is super quick to assemble for a snack or dessert.
