Need a fun and easy summer Cricut craft? Check out this tutorial for how I made these personalized tumblers! They are perfect for poolside and beach adventures in the summer sun.
These cups are also great gifts for parties (or family reunions like me), and they were quick to prep and easy to personalize. Keep reading for the details and check out my Instagram for the video!
Personalized Tumblers for a Family Reunion
While I have personalized a variety of cups before (glass cups and other tumblers), these specific tumblers were made for a family reunion in Costa Rica this summer. This post will contain links to the exact tumblers, plus the font I used in Cricut Design Space
We wanted to do something a little special, so my aunt bought tumblers for everyone, along with Pedialyte packets, stickers, and Dawn dish soap wipes for cleaning. Meanwhile, I pre-cut everyone’s name out on permanent vinyl, and we actually had a mini station in the hotel room to personalize them on the trip itself. Enjoy the tutorial!
DIY Personalized Tumblers Instructions
What You'll Need
- Cricut (I used the Cricut Maker 3; you can use whatever machine you have).
- Permanent Vinyl (I used the Smart Cricut White Permanent Vinyl; you can use whatever color you have and a mat as needed, but make sure it is permanent).
- Tumblers (We used these skinny and tapered tumblers from Amazon; again, use what you have).
- Review: We loved the shape of these cups, and the multicolor packs. While they insulate decently, they are not as big or as well insulating as other tumblers though.
- Contact or Transfer Paper
- Scissors
- Tools for weeding and scraping
- Optional
- Other stickers to decorate
- Pedialyte packets
- Dawn dish soap wipes
- Other goodies to fill the tumblers
Using the Cricut
Before our trip, I used the Cricut to pre-cut all of the names using the following details:
- Font: BFC Craft Table
- Size: 72
- All other settings default
After a test cut, I cut all the names out at once. Then, from the big sheet of around 30 names cut out, I took a paper cutter and scissors to cut out each name into its own strip.
Next, weed your name stickers by removing the background. You should be left with only the actual name on the sticker backing. If you don’t have the proper Cricut tools, tweezers can sometimes also work.
If you are traveling like me, I HIGHLY recommend the Cricut Smart Vinyl since it has a sturdier backing. Advantages include:
- Easier to cut into individual strips & weed
- More durable for travel
- Better if you are making lots of name stickers
However, a mat and non-Smart vinyl could be used if
- You don’t have Smart Vinyl on hand
- You are not traveling and plan to transfer the names to the tumbler/cup immediately
- You are only doing a handful of name stickers
- Note – If you use a mat, you may want to use the Cricut to cut one name, weed, and transfer before repeating for the next name.
Once this step is done, you can either immediately use contact paper to transfer to your tumbler, or store in a Ziploc for travel like me!
Our Personalized Tumblers Station
Now for the fun part! At our hotel room, we set up a little personalization station.
Each family member would pick a cup, any Costa Rica stickers they wanted, their pedialyte packet, and then their sticker.
At the next station, my mom and I used contact paper to stick the names on the cup.
Using the contact paper
To actually stick the names to the cup, we cut a strip of contact paper a little bit wider than the name strip.
Carefully place your contact paper on top of the name sticker (facing up), so that the line of text follows the line on the contact paper’s grid.
Use a scraper (or a credit card and phone like us) to make sure the sticker transfers to the contact paper.
Then, carefully peel the contact paper up, place where you want on the cup, press down to seal to the cup, and remove the contact paper!
Have fun personalizing in different directions, adding other stickers, or even ditching the contact paper and getting creative.
