Elevate your next wedding or party with this beautiful linen welcome sign! This DIY fabric sign was a quick project that will save you money compared to pricey signage alternatives. Check out the supplies, equipment, and steps I used to make this wedding welcome sign for two of my favorite people.

Supplies & Equipment
- Clothing rack – I used this black clothing rack from Amazon for about $30.
- Alternatively, my mom has also made a similar stand using gold spray-painted PVC pipe for a DIY and customizable option.
- I also bought this white clothing rack from Amazon, but switched to the black for a more favorable look.
- Linen – Depending on how long you want your sign to be, you’ll likely need at least 2.5 yeards of fabric. I used a linen blend from Joann’s on sale for $9.99/yard (original price $12.99/yd)
- Tragically, Joann’s is closing. You can buy fabric from Hobby Lobby, or even Walmart for a decent price
- I also saw someone else repurpose a linen tablecloth which I thought was a great idea!
- Vinyl + Cutter – I used permanent vinyl and a Cricut Maker 3 cutter for the letters.
- Alternatively, you can use iron on vinyl. I chose permanent vinyl instead of iron-on since this sign would not be washed or re-used. The permanent vinyl was a better choice than removable vinyl (I don’t think removable vinyl has a sticky enough backing to stick to the linen blend of the fabric I chose)
- Another option is to paint on the letters, either with a stencil or freehanded.
- Sewing machine + thread – For a clean edge, I used a sewing machine to hem all edges and create a loop at the top that would hold up the sign.
- You could leave the edges raw, or even use fabric or hemming tape if you don’t have a sewing machine.
How To Make the Linen Welcome Sign
These are the steps I took to make my linen sign, which was a huge success! Adjust these instructions to your needs as needed.
Step 1: Gather all of your supplies & equipment.
Step 2: As needed, build the clothing/garment rack or frame for the sign.
Step 3: Measure & cut your fabric. I used pins to hold things together before I cut. Adjust the length to your liking. I made mine a little longer to drape over the bottom “shoe rack” since I was using a garment rack.
- To hang my sign, I folded over the top and sewed a few inches down, leaving a loop. Then, I ran the top piece of the rack through the loop like a curtain (see image below).

Step 4: Hem & sew your fabric. (This step intimidated me, but was so much quicker and easier than expected.)
Step 5: Cut & apply the vinyl. As mentioned, I cut my Smart Permanent Vinyl with my Cricut machine. After cutting, I weeded the excess and used transfer vinyl to apply the letters to the sign.
- Tip: I found it easier to apply the vinyl to the sign by laying it on the floor, instead of while the fabric was hanging.
Step 6: Hang your sign on the rack & you are done!! This was a gift for my friends, and they styled with long thick satin ribbon for a beautiful finishing touch.
